My family arrived in the United States as political refugees from Cuba in the 1960s. Their sacrifices and hard-earned wisdom are embedded in everything I pursue. One of the goals of my research is theorizing about how to construct an intersectional identity that meaningfully engages with truth.
The overall focus of my research can be summarized by the following question. What does it take to heal the worldview of a group of people (myself included) who have only known overwhelm and disillusionment? I see myself combating this with several ideas. For example, the consideration of self-compassion as an epistemic virtue that empowers oppressed individuals who are struggling for intelligibility. I reason that if it is difficult (if not impossible) to add to our collective story at this time, then it is important to strategize ways in which we can preserve currently disregarded input for future benefit.
